Phonics Screening Check Information for Parents (PSC)
As your child embarks on their educational journey, we would like to provide you with essential information regarding the Phonics Screening Check (PSC). Conducted annually for Year 1 students, this check aims to assess the children’s phonics knowledge and their ability to decode words. The results will not only highlight individual progress but also guide future teaching strategies.
What is the Phonics Screening Check?
The PSC consists of 40 words, including both real words and ‘nonsense’ words, which are vital for assessing decoding skills. For example, while children will read familiar words such as ‘cat’ and ‘dog’, they will also encounter made-up words like ‘tub’ and ‘zog’. This approach is crucial as it ensures that children can apply their phonetic understanding to unfamiliar language.
Why is it Important?
The PSC is a vital part of your child’s learning journey. By identifying children’s phonics skills at this early stage, we can provide targeted support where necessary. Mastery of phonics is foundational for proficient reading and writing, enabling your child to flourish academically and develop a lifelong love for literature.
How Can You Support Your Child?
There are several ways you can assist your child in preparing for the PSC:
-
Reading Together: Regularly read with your child, encouraging them to sound out unfamiliar words independently.
-
Playing Phonics Games: Engage in fun activities that promote phonetic understanding, such as rhyming games or 'I spy' using phonics sounds.
-
Utilising Resources: Access phonics resources available on our school website for additional practice.
Finally, the Phonics Screening Check is a comprehensive tool that not only assesses your child’s current phonetic skills but also sets the groundwork for their future literacy success. Thank you for your continued support in nurturing your child's education.
